Steel Arch Buildings

Throughout history, the arch has been used to support significant tension and weight, allowing construction on a scale that would not be possible without it. When it comes to steel arch buildings, one of the toughest building materials in the world is joined with one of the toughest building methods, creating a powerful structure that is stronger than it looks. Yet, despite the architectural advantages of arches, the primary function of a steel arch building is less for supporting great weight than for quickly and easily constructing a simple structure used primarily for storage.

Often times, a steel arch building looks like one single panel of steel in a smooth, unbroken arch, that is anchored on both ends to the ground and capped at the ends with either more steel, wooden walls, or even other materials. That, in essence, is what it is, although the steel arch is often composed of many panels riveted or bolted together. There are many advantages to this style of building.

The arch requires no central support, which means there is no support beam in the middle of the structure. While the design of the arch requires less room on the ends, where the curve of the roof becomes the walls, the space left in the middle creates ideal storage space for large vehicles, such as airplanes, recreational vehicles or farm equipment. Steel arch buildings are also famously customizable, with choices of how to cap the roof and wall structure.

Strength of the Arch

As these arches are made from steel, it is easy to see why they are relied on for durability and functionality. Steel arches are incredibly durable and able to withstand any amount of weathering. Properly constructed structures can even stand up heartily to storms.
