Air Conditioning Contractors

By Michael Willis
Simply put, an air conditioner is a machine which adjusts the temperature of a room or any other space to make it more comfortable for those in that space to live and work.

Air conditioning occurs through the actions of three devices: a condenser, an evaporation coil, and a blower. A condenser compresses refrigerant gases and sends them to the evaporation coil which, in turn, cools the air circulating around it before the blower pushes the cooled air out into the environment being cooled. The cycle continues as long as the machine is operating resulting in a drop in the ambient temperature.

An air conditioning unit can also heat the air when it is too cool.

Types of Air Conditioning

Generally, air conditioning is delivered in two ways: either from a standalone unit or via a centralized cooling system.
Unit conditioners are ideal for single rooms, small homes, and any other relatively small space. They come with various levels of power and cooling output and should be chosen taking into regard the space that will be cooled, how often that space will be cooled, and how quickly one would want that space cooled.

Unit conditioners come in three basic varieties. Window units are easily and quickly installed in most any standard window. Built-in units can be installed in windows or even directly into walls. They are usually more powerful and expensive. Split systems are also built in but the sometimes noisy air compressors are installed outside making the unit quieter; these units are also more expensive and usually need to be installed by professionals.

A centralized air conditioning system ties the entire house (or other space) into one unit which cools everything through a series of vents in individual rooms. This is, of course, a way to quickly and efficiently cool an entire home (or office suite or whatever large space needs to be cooled) but, of course, it is a much more expensive manner of air conditioning.

Maintenance and Considerations

Deciding upon an air conditioning system should be based on several criteria. Among these is need (if one lives in a moderate climate where temperatures only rarely rise to uncomfortable levels, air conditioning may be a needless expense), cost, ventilation to insure both comfort and compliance with legal requirements, the noise level and reliability of the machine, and, in cases where it is relevant, the qualifications of the contractor installing the system.
