Couplings

A coupling, also called a fitting, is used to connect two parts in order to create a whole. In home maintenance in repair, a coupling is used to connect materials used in building or maintaining a structure. For instance, two water pipes can be connected by a coupling, or a hose might connect to an outdoor faucet by using a coupling. These parts have male and female sides to make the attachment to parts easier, and may be made out of a variety of strong materials such as polyurethane or brass.

Each coupling type has strengths and weaknesses; in fact, no coupling has an “all purpose” designation. For instance, when purchasing, keep the necessary size in mind; also, if the coupling is going to interact with liquid, be sure it isn't made with a material that rusts. Different couplings include:

Couplings are used in a variety of projects where the materials involved need a strong connection. Such projects can include plumbing work such as toilet installation or the replacement of a faucet.

Couplings are commonplace, and are easily purchased at home repair retailers and hardware stores. There should be a variety of the fittings you might need in stock. If you need further assistance, ask a member of the store's staff.
