Heating Equipment

By Mary Stasiewicz
Heating equipment is used to provide warmth during cold weather. Typically this equipment is used indoors but some types of heating equipment can also be used outdoors as well. Some of the common types of heating equipment are packaged heating units, boilers, individual space heaters and furnaces. Each type of heating equipment has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some types of heating equipment are also more effective in certain space situations while other types are effective in other situations. Determining which type of heating equipment will be most effective for your situation can result in a tremendous cost savings for the property owner.

Types of Heating Equipment

There are many types of heating equipment that can be used to provide warmth to a particular environment. Some of the most common types of heating equipment include packaged heating units, boilers, individual space heaters and furnaces. Packaged heating units do not allow for a great deal of flexibility. These units are self contained units that are assembled in a factory and installed in the environment where they are needed. Boilers are another piece of heating equipment. A boiler is a tank in which the combustion of fuels, such as natural gas or other fuels, is used to generate heat by first heating water to produce steam. Individual space heaters may also be used to heat a particular space. These units are self contained and they may be either free standing or permanently mounted in the room. A space heater is usually powered by electricity. A furnace is a tank system in which fuel or electricity is used to warm air which is distributed through heating ducts throughout the space.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Heating Equipment

The common types of heating equipment all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Packaged heating units can be very effective for heating small enclosed spaces but they are not very effective for heating large open spaces. These units generally do very well for heating the room in which they are placed but the heat does not carry very well in large spaces. Boilers can be effective for heating multiple rooms in a building but they require ductwork to carry the heat throughout the building. One major advantage of individual space heaters is that many of them are portable. They can be moved from room to room as needed. However, the disadvantage of these types of units is that you may require several of them throughout the building to heat the entire space. Furnaces are used by many homes for providing heat. These systems may operate either on gas or electricity and they heat the air directly and distribute the air throughout the building by way of ductwork. The disadvantage is that heating ducts have to be installed if they do not already exist to allow the hot air to be distributed throughout the building. The advantage though is that this type of heating equipment is very effective for heating the entire building.
