Metal Buildings

By Kiersten Brazier
Metal buildings are used in non-residential settings. They are typically low-rise, and have metal walls and roofs, as well as metal support systems. They may come pre-fabricated (meaning that the design is made by the supplier and the parts are shipped ready to be assembled) or you may choose to specify the dimensions and design yourself. Metal buildings are a very economical, fast, and lasting alternative to traditional buildings and can be used for warehouses, offices, churches, storage sheds, and even hangars.

Types of Metal Buildings

You can use metal buildings to fill almost any need, from the most basic shed to a more complex church building. For the simpler projects, prefabricated kits are probably the best way to go. Determine how much space you will need, find a reputable dealer, and order. If it is a small project, you can probably assemble it yourself.

Larger projects can be more complicated. If you are building a warehouse or offices, you will need to take more things into consideration. What style of metal building do you want? How large does it need to be? Are you going to want to have the interior finished, and have an exterior added to cover the metal? Will you need to install insulation? How much lighting will you need? All of these design questions will need to be carefully thought through and planned before you can begin ordering your materials. If you can find a general contractor that works with metal buildings, he or she can guide you through this process and help you design the best building for your needs.

Special Considerations

Where you are building will determine a lot of what goes into your metal building. Find out what the safety regulations and building requirements are for your area. If you don't know these beforehand, you could end up with a building that is not up to code, and therefore illegal and potentially dangerous. If you live in an area with snow, you will need to have a stronger or more sloped roof. Of special concern are areas with high winds or that are in hurricane-prone areas. Talk with the manufacturer about strengthening measures you can undertake to protect your building against wind damage. It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to build to code in order to protect your investment. Reputable contractors and dealers will know this, and will help you make certain that your building complies with every regulation it needs to.

How to Get Started

As mentioned above, determine your needs. If it is a larger project, it is a good idea to go through a general contractor, unless you have a lot of planning and construction experience. It will pay off in the long run to hire an expert and wind up with exactly the building you need. The contractor can help you through the designing, purchasing, and building of the structure. They can also put you in contact with reputable dealers. Once you get going, you may be pleasantly surprised at how much faster metal buildings are to erect compared to other construction projects. You can save money and time, and have a building that is useful, safe, and a great investment.
