Powder Coatings

According to the EnviroTech Financial glossary of terms, a coating is “a liquid or mastic composition which is converted to a solid protective, decorative or functional adherent film after application as a thin layer.” The South Coast Air Quality Management District defines coatings as “materials that are applied to a surface which form a continuous film in order to beautify and/or protect a surface.” Examples of coatings include decorative coatings such as paints, primers, varnishes and surfacers or mechanical coatings such as sealers and alloy-coatings.

Powder coatings are any coatings applied as dry, finely ground particles of pigment and resin. Powder coatings stick to substrates as a continuous film when melted and fused. Powder coatings may contain a variety of substances or materials such as acrylics (in their thermoplastic form) or polypropylenes. Polypropylenes are durable, but lightweight thermoplastic resins composed of polymers and propylene. Powder coatings are both decorative and protective and they are applied to surfaces through a spraying process which involves charged powder particles and heated surfaces. The result is a smooth, durable and high-quality finish.

Powder coating is popular in many different industries including: appliance manufacturing industries, sporting goods manufacturers, automobile manufacturers, lawn and garden furniture manufacturers and awnings manufacturing. Powder coatings are also used in the manufacturing of many everyday household items and products. Barbecue grills, lawnmowers and even garden tools are typically coated with powder coatings. Because these items are exposed to the elements for extended periods, powder coating is a good choice as this type of coating is known for its extreme durability and protective properties.

In addition, powder coatings are commonly used for office furniture such as file cabinets and other metal furniture as well as smaller office supplies such as pens and thumbtacks. Powder coatings are commonly used in the retail industry as well for everything from shelves and display racks to store fixtures. Vending machines and fire extinguishers are also typically coated with powder coatings.

Many industries opt for powder coatings over paint coatings due to their cost-effectiveness, attractiveness and durability. Others prefer powder coatings because they are one of the most environmentally friendly protective finishes or decorative coatings.

Contrary to popular belief, powder coating has been around since the 1950s. It wasn't until the early 1980s that the powder coating process began to increase in popularity. During the 1990s, the process was very popular and it became very common in a variety of different industries. Today, sales in the powder coating industry are estimated at around $1 billion a year.
